MY FIRST SALARY

Do you remember your first ever salary? How much was it? How did you spend it? How old were you and what was the job? Given the same amount of money now, do you think you’d use it differently? I was 19 years old when I got my first salary working as a Student Assistant at Strathmore Uni’s current School of Business then called School of Management & Commerce (SMC). How I landed the job and held onto it for the course of my studying there still remains something of a mystery and sheer luck. I started the job during the ever busy graduation period when ‘extra hands’ were needed to help ease the process. For about 3 weeks my job for a start was to issue gowns to the graduands from my faculty. My task included issuing the gown, the tassel, cap and the invitation cards. Each student had to then sign against their name after they’d picked everything. I had to make sure that the numbers tallied at the end of the day lest there be a deficit of invitation cards. “You do know there just ...

2023 READS: BOOK 1

I almost forgot how beautifully lost one can get in words and a world carefully curated and gently hidden in a book by an independent mind, in this case Omwa Ombara! In making attempts to not be that ‘black person’ referred to when they mention that ‘easily, secrets can be hidden from a black person if kept inside a book’, I assembled components of my intellectual being and beseeched them to go on this journey, Omwa’s journey - God’s Child on the Run. The 2007 PEV & skirmishes are stories some of us only get to hear retold as while they happened we were struck by the luck light and safely kept away from the warring front back in the cities. It’s in 2007 that I got to deeply appreciate the fact that my upcountry, as interior as it is, was the safest place we could be at the time. We’d occasionally only gather round the radio to listen to updates on the evenings the said Radio ‘accepted’ to work. Omwa on the other hand got served a different plate in comparison to people like me. She...

ONE DOWN, YEARNING FOR MORE!

Happy Anniversary Baby!  30.04.2022 | 30.04.2023  One Year!  Happy Anniversary my King!  Exactly a year ago today, we stood on the lush green grass of the skillfully mowed lawns of Fred’s Ranch, Isinya - dreamingly, lovingly & longingly gazing into each other’s eyes and read out loud our vows before our families & friends. Verbatim, I vowed that; “Where you stay, I will stay. Where you go, I will go. Your people shall be my people. Your home shall be my home and your God, my God.”    For one year, I have had the unexplainable yet undeniable joy of staying with you in our safe haven of limitless creativity, pocket of peace, laughter and deep conversations otherwise known as our home . I want more!  For one year, I have gone where you’ve lead us. It made perfect sense that we are both adventurous. Oh, the places we’ve gone! The people we’ve met! The memories we’ve made! Baby, can I get just a ‘lil bit more?   For one year, o...

VISIT TO WINGS OF HOPE, RUAI | STELLAR GIRLS KENYA

...where hope is renewed, dreams are restored and dignity is upheld. I watched from close proximity as one teenage girl teased another who looked about 6 months pregnant. “That baby needs to come out now, so that he or she can dance and enjoy some music! Yes, we will teach him or her how to dance.” They both laughed and admired the growing belly. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched them. Maybe this would have been a totally different scenario if Wings of Hope Rescue Centre had not stepped in and made the bold step to take in these beautiful girls. They house them, feed them and take them to school to secure a stable future for themselves and their babies. Stellar Girls Kenya mentors braved through a hot Sunday morning on 12th February 2023 to travel to Ruai to spend the day with the teenage mums. Amid the bonding and stories from CBD town and in the bus, we were full of anticipation of what the day held. We were ready and excited to meet the Wings of Hope family. It was going to be ...

MY VALENTINE

My darling husband ๐Ÿ’–, You were worth the wait! Remember when we were just friends, the first time I told you that I have a personal blog; a haven I occasionally dump my stories & thoughts?...to which you carefully listened then asked: “Will you one day write about me on your blog?”  I laughed!! I laughed so hard then told you how for you to feature in my writing you’d have to be out-of-this-world special to me ... to which you thoughtfully responded: “Mercy, never say never!” ….. and then went on a mission to overturn my entire life!! You clever, genius hunk of a man! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m here today to categorically say that a blogpost is the least of what you, my elusive leading man, deserve! The universe kept saying “The right person will show up, find a path into your heart and know how to hold your love with all the delicateness it deserves, choose you just as deeply as they choose themselves and as you choose them, reciprocate your vibe, match your energy and never make you feel lik...

2023

Dear 2023, I don’t know what you’re gonna be all about  but what I know for sure is that this is my year,  as clichรฉ as that may sound! January gave me a platform to set things in motion  and sketch a simple vision for myself, by myself.  Now that I have a map meant to guide me  throughout and knowing that I possess  everything that’s required from and of me  to walk into my best self, I give myself freely  to the will of God and to the universe to work it’s magic!  I am walking right into the most authentic,  happy and fulfilling years of my life.  I am committed to exercising the love  muscle on myself just as much as I do to others.  I am letting go of all the occasional self doubt/fear  that sometimes creep up trying to convince me  that I ain’t enough. I am enough. I am authentic. I am stellar. …and I am here to experience life in its totality.

TAKING STOCK - 2022

This is a post I usually really long to write. In December 2021, I wrote this one here: TAKING STOCK - 2021 . Fun read. It combines most, if not all things that have happened in the course of the year which contributed to my being here now. I love looking back at the strides I made and plan ahead but also correct things I might've handled wrong. Now, as 2021 ended, I was out of a job and was super broke. The company I'd been working at for about 3 years closed down - Covid manenos . Good thing was that as we approached year end I got a temporary out-bound sales executive job at Glovo. Can we one day talk about matching salaries to fancy job titles attached to it, because wueeh! ? It paid the necessary bills anyway so I stuck with it for about 4 months as I sought better avenues. I don't miss the sales review meetings or having to wait for a restaurant owner in Rongai for weeks to give me a response on whether he'll sign with us only to go there two week after (with th...
